How do I create content that supports outbound instead of sitting separately from sales?
Content supports outbound when a sender can name one job before writing: open a conversation, answer one repeated objection, or give a champion a note to forward. Take that job from live calls, ship one source note and a short wrapper, and keep the first cold email plain text. If nobody can name the job, do not publish.
Name the sales job before a word is written
Content supports outbound when the person who talks to buyers can finish one sentence: this piece opens a conversation, answers one objection they keep hearing, or gives a champion a note to forward.
HubSpot’s sales-enablement guide defines the category as resources that help a team educate buyers, answer questions, and close: buyer-facing pages, demos, and cases, and rep-facing comparisons, how-to-sell pages, and the sheets a rep uses on the call.
Take the backlog from calls, not from a calendar
The next asset is a question, objection, comparison, or silence that already showed up live.
HubSpot’s credibility article says material written in a vacuum goes unused. Take the list from the messy middle: questions the seller avoids, moments they defer, promises to circle back. In HubSpot’s 2025 State of Sales, cited there, nearly 28% of salespeople named better use of enablement content as a focus.
Log role, the stuck question in their words, your answer, and what happened next. Three repeats earn a source note. Until then, change the email. See founder interviews into content.
Salesforce’s account-based marketing guide treats one account as a market of one, at one-to-one, one-to-few, or one-to-many scale. It says ABM supports and complements traditional lead generation and does not replace it, and that you start with a small pilot on a list of valuable accounts.
Match the buyer’s question, then the moment in the thread
Write for the stuck question, then the moment a human will use the piece.
HubSpot’s credibility article says 36% of sellers name buyer confidence as their most important job, and 33% focus on navigating internal buy-in.
| Stuck on | Make | When | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is this my problem? | A point of view in their words | Email one, or a lookup | A product tour |
| How serious is it? | A worked example from their inputs | After they describe their setup | An unsourced calculator |
| Options, including doing nothing? | Stay, build inside, or change | They already do this internally | A benefits list |
| Why you, versus what we have? | Where you lose, named | They name an alternative | Wins only |
| Will this hold here? | What changed, and what did not | After a meeting, if it is real | A logo strip |
| How do I take this upstairs? | Problem, options, risk, first 30 days | A second role, or a quiet thread | Your process deck |
HubSpot’s product-content guide says a case covers the challenge, what you did, and the outcome. Without those three lines from a real account, stay on row one or row three.
One filled card, no customer and no result. Stuck line: “We already do this internally.” Claim you may use: name the step that is slow, missed, or redone, and where the note does not apply. Email one, no link: “Teams that already run this in-house usually feel it in one step. Is that the step that slips, or is the internal version fine?” Next ask: a reply that names the step. SalesHive’s outbound enablement guide says if the sender cannot use it in the next thirty seconds of a live conversation, it is marketing collateral, not enablement.
Cut one source note into the wrappers you will paste
One source note per stuck question holds the claim, the proof you may use, and where it does not apply.
Jason Oakley, cited by HubSpot, splits that claim into Know (background before the call), Say (the lines), and Show (a visual the champion can forward, such as a one-pager). Label four cuts as yours: lines you will speak, a short note a champion can forward, one public page so a lookup matches the email, and internal bullets that stay off that page.
Close’s outbound guide argues for plain text, and against attachments or a pile of links, because a decorated mail reads as a pitch. The note follows a reply, or one later touch the card allows. The same guide also recommends a short screen recording of the prospect’s site, in an email or a LinkedIn message. On this page it is not email one: it waits for a reply, is about their setup, and a person approves it before it sends. Relevance to the role beats a cute personal detail. A checked fact in the opener is personalize outbound without manual research. The later publish loop is a content engine with one marketer and AI.
Ship a use card, or the file will stay closed
The finish is a sender grabbing the file mid-conversation.
Six fields: role, trigger words, the claim in one sentence, a paste-ready opener, the next ask, and where the file lives. HubSpot says organization beats volume. Tag by persona, deal stage, and objection. Keep the file in the CRM, on the calendar, or in the inbox.
A weekly half hour prevents the split Salesforce’s alignment article names: once a deal is in the pipeline, sales tells marketing to step away. The same piece describes a weekly note of what is planned, a monthly look across one six-week span of what happened, what is live, and what is coming, and an InsideView episode where sales had reached fewer than half the people involved in the purchase while marketing knew the rest.
Run outbound and content as one loop at early stage
An early-stage startup combines outbound and content by refusing a second calendar. This month’s calls produce one note, and that note goes back into the next sends.
Zeliq’s playbook says not to wait 12 to 18 months for search to compound. Outbound can produce first meetings in one to four weeks, and the calls sharpen the buyer. A small set of accounts, or a category nobody searches, makes waiting to be found the wrong bet.
Outreach says a team with fewer than 10 SDRs should keep two or three motions, and that a silent cold email can later arrive as an inbound request, so reply-only scoring undercounts. With no SDR, one sequence is enough and the note supports it. SalesCaptain describes a later layer you do not need yet: content creates a signal, and outbound uses it. Do not buy a visitor-identification stack until one note is worth sending.
Order: email sentence, objection note after three repeats, forwardable brief when a second role appears, one public version, then a case only with a real challenge, response, and outcome. Close says outbound fits a startup that lacks awareness and wants results now. The seat is lean outbound for seed or one person for content, outbound, and experiments. The claim matches positioning into campaigns.
The page and the email are different acts. Zeliq maps the US, the UK, the EU, and Canada, and that map is not a clearance. US: sender identification, an honest subject, a postal address, and an unsubscribe honored within 10 business days. UK, on that page: a corporate address is permitted under legitimate interest, a sole trader or partnership needs a soft opt-in or prior consent, and every mail needs an opt-out. Canada, on that page: prior express consent, or implied consent only from a business relationship in the last 24 months or an inquiry in the last 6 months. In the Netherlands, article 11.7 of the Telecommunicatiewet prohibits unsolicited commercial email unless you can show prior consent. Exception: a company or a person acting in their business, and only when they published the address for that kind of message and you use it for that purpose. Other exception: your own customer, about your similar product, with an easy objection when the address was collected and in every mail. State your real identity and a postal address or number where they can ask you to stop. Check the recipient before the sequence.
Count whether it entered a thread, then retire the rest
Judge use in selling, not traffic. Count sends or times spoken, replies that pick up the point, meetings where it opened, and forwards. An anonymous page view is not permission to email. If the same objection is unchanged after four weeks of relevant conversations, rewrite or delete.
Outreach warns against scoring each channel alone, and against dropping outbound to wait for pages. The library has split from sales when the calendar came before any call, the post and the sequence disagree, email one is a link or a file, or the card is missing. Zeliq says the model proposes, a person edits and approves, and raw model output does not send.
Leave the asset unwritten in these cases
Do not write when you cannot name the buyer, have not heard the question, or the offer sentence still moves every week.
Also skip it when nothing repeats, the buyer is only “startups” or “small businesses,” or the case, benchmark, or figure has nowhere to point. Salesforce says ABM needs the right accounts, people, and time, plus coordination. One-to-one is a fully unique campaign for one very important account. A page per logo is that, and a first sprint does not have it. Also skip it if nobody can answer a positive reply within about a day. Zeliq puts that qualification inside 24 hours. If people already search the category by name, spend the week on being found.
How I attach the note to the send
I start from the calls you already have, write one source note for the objection that keeps returning, and put a plain-text line in the next sequence. The public page stays on that same claim, and anything a prospect will read waits for your approval.
I am Piet Baudoin, an AI-native growth marketer for startups who does not only advise but builds and executes. I am one person, the sole trader behind Poldermarketing, fully remote, in Dutch and English. Freshly funded startups hire me freelance for a bounded project, or a few days a week, as one marketer for marketing, AI, and automation, from the first message to the first customers, without a separate specialist for each part. I am strong in AI, content, automation, and the workflows that keep a note, a send, and a log together. Google Ads and Meta Ads are relatively new to me. I can set them up and review them. I am the wrong person when the job is scaling a large ads program.
The free growth scan is how the current site reads to a stranger. How I work is the shape of an engagement. Positioning and messaging is where I start when the words are the constraint.
Questions people ask
Should the first cold email link to an article?
No. Put the observation in the mail. Send the note after a reply, or as one later touch the use card allows. If that card does not name the touch, leave the link out. A link in email one is a separate bet, not the system.
How many assets do I need before outbound starts?
None. Start sending once you can say the buyer and the offer in one line. The first asset comes after the same stuck question has shown up in three conversations. Until then, the content is the sentence in the email. A library built before those calls is how a content program sits apart from sales and never gets opened on a call.
How should early-stage startups combine outbound and content marketing?
Run one loop on one buyer. Use outbound to get this month's conversations, turn a repeated question into one note, and put that note back into the next sends. Keep one public version so a lookup matches the email. Leave search, ads, and a broad editorial calendar until the offer survives those calls. Two owners and two calendars recreate the split.
What if we have no customer story yet?
Do not invent one. Until you can write a real account's challenge, what you did, and the outcome, send a diagnostic, an options note, or a forwardable plan. [HubSpot's product-content guide](https://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33797/13-types-of-product-content-sales-needs-to-close-more-deals.aspx) is the test for those three lines. A logo strip or a borrowed industry figure is not a case. Leave the case unwritten until one situation can be told straight.
What engagement is worth a follow-up?
Follow up when there is a reply, a second person asks for the brief, or someone engages after your touch. That next message answers the question on the use card and does not paste a new pitch. An anonymous page view is not permission to email and does not start a second sequence. Do not buy a visitor-identification stack before a note is worth sending.
