What does a growth marketer who automates lead generation and marketing operations do?
Hire one person only when they can show a channel they scaled or stopped and a CRM path that captures, deduplicates, scores, routes, and alerts on failure. A job title or a tool logo is not that proof. A human still approves anything a prospect will read. If either proof is missing, split lead generation from marketing operations.
Who can build lead generation and the automation behind it?
Hire one operator who, in a normal week, runs one test on the audience, the offer, or the route, and keeps one CRM path current: capture, dedupe, score, route, alert on failure, and a handoff sales actually uses. The stop number is duplicate rate, failed steps, time to the owner’s task, or the share of records that match the qualified-lead sentence.
Optima, on 18 March 2026, names only what the last four rows own.
| Buyer | Buying | Hire when | Walk away |
|---|---|---|---|
| One operator | Pipeline, record path, one failure | One review covers a new test and broken records | A diagram, or a system they did not build |
| Lead generation vendor | Lists, sequences, meetings | A qualified-lead sentence exists and records land in your CRM | More names, or no origin |
| Automation builder | Workflows, scoring, connectors | Audience and offer are already chosen | No test to stop, or a new stack |
| Two people | Marketer plus workflow builder | One review cannot cover both | Split before one sample path runs |
| Operations manager | Process, governance, performance, sales alignment | Stack or team size slows delivery | Cannot open the assignment workflow |
| Automation specialist | Journeys, segmentation, scoring, triggers | Audience, offer, and stop rule exist | No test they killed |
| CRM specialist | Configuration, hygiene, workflows, permissions | One CRM is already the record | A private contact list |
| Growth engineer | Experiment speed, tracking, landing pages | One channel already repeats | Code, and no stopped test |
CRV, on 14 September 2026, calls a growth marketer full-funnel and experiment-driven. That is the growth half of this seat, not the workflow half. At seed, one person does acquisition, activation, retention, referral, and revenue. See a fractional growth marketer who ships automations. CRV flags no named loss, a gain with no baseline, and a channel-of-the-week history.
Who can combine growth marketing with marketing operations?
They can name a test they stopped and the failed step that counted it. Growth picks the audience, the offer, and the stop.
CRV, on 14 September 2026, separates a growth marketer, who runs the tests, from a growth marketing manager, who adds the roadmap and often the first junior hires. A growth marketer does not need to code. Performance marketing is efficiency inside paid channels. Demand generation answers to its own pipeline metrics and works closely with sales. Product marketing owns who the offer is for and why you win. Salesforce lists a manager, an analyst, an automation specialist, and a technology administrator. Consider that function when the stack or the team size slows delivery, or when data silos and broken processes show up. One path does not need all four seats. Automating the report waits until a number can stop a test.
Who can own both marketing execution and marketing operations?
One person owns both when they ship the message and the channel and still maintain capture, routing, and reporting. On the Salesforce chart, general marketing owns the content and the audience, and the operations manager oversees strategy, budgets, and team alignment. Operations is the how. A director who cannot open the lead-assignment workflow is still not the owner of the path.
Each station has an owner and a stop rule
A person writes the rule. The workflow may repeat only that rule.
| Station | A person decides | The workflow may | Leave manual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source | Who is in, and which origin you trust | Block people already in the CRM | A bought list with no origin |
| Capture | Which form or reply counts | Create or update the record | A second record for the same person |
| Enrich | Which fields you trust | Fill blanks from one approved source | Overwriting a value a human fixed |
| Qualify | Fit, what counts as intent, and how recent it must be | Apply only that sentence | A model that invents the definition |
| Route and send | Approve any message a prospect will read. The current owner wins | The written score otherwise. A blank or a conflict goes to a named queue | No identity or opt-out on the first message |
| Report | Which number can stop a test | Refresh the count and flag failures | A dashboard that never stops a test |
HubSpot defines a workflow as a trigger, actions, and records. Enrollment can include existing records. Re-enrollment is optional. If you turn it on, the record can enter again, so submit a sample twice and read what fired before a second send is possible. Not a sales sequence. One CRM holds the person, company, source, stage, owner, and suppression flag. Salesforce adds project tools and analytics, and a lead can route by geography or account size. Connecting the CRM and the email tool is that record. CRV puts drafts, routine reporting, and basic segmentation on the model. The person still picks the test and checks the output.
Who can automate lead research for a B2B startup?
The same owner, on source and enrich only. A database, agent, or scraper may fill blanks from one approved source. Research ends at a human yes or no.
The ICO treats a company website, Companies House, social media, and the press as public sources, not permission. A name or an identifying email is still personal data, and a public page is not agreement. Store it and you are the controller. If they did not give it to you, tell them within a reasonable period and no later than one month, unless an exception the ICO points to applies. The two bases most relevant for a business contact are consent, and legitimate interests after you name the interest, show the processing is necessary, and balance it against the person. Mail to a department, with no person’s name, is not personal data on that reading. A networking profile used in a personal, professional capacity is not a business-to-business recipient. That UK reading does not govern an EU send or a Dutch company address. Lead research and outreach starts after this check.
Outreach automation still has to be lawful
A sequence is a send. Before enrollment, suppress objectors, current customers, and open opportunities, and log the lawful basis.
In the UK the ICO says the PECR electronic-mail rule skips corporate subscribers: companies, limited liability partnerships, Scottish partnerships, some government bodies, and an employee address there, because the employer is the subscriber. Name yourself and give an opt-out address. PECR does not require you to comply with that opt-out, though you should. If the address identifies a person, you still need a UK GDPR basis and a notice, and you stop when they object. Sole traders and some partnerships need consent or the soft opt-in: details from a sale or negotiation of your product or service, your own similar products, and a refusal at collection and in every message. If the type is unclear, treat them as an individual. Social direct messages are electronic mail. Screen live calls on the Telephone Preference Service and the Corporate Telephone Preference Service. A live call needs no consent when the number is on neither list and has not objected. Name yourself and show a number. A listed number needs that business’s consent. Stop after any objection. Claims-management calls need consent. A pension-scheme call needs a trustee, a scheme manager, or a Financial Conduct Authority firm, plus consent or the strict relationship test. A recorded automated call needs consent that covers calls from you. This guidance is under review because of the Data (Use and Access) Act.
The European Commission says marketing email follows ePrivacy Directive Article 13 as the member state implemented it. A bought list needs proof of GDPR-compliant collection and that the seller may use it for advertising. Where consent was the basis, it had to cover passing the data on for the buyer’s own marketing. Keep the list up to date. Such lists use legitimate interest, with a right to object. Tell people by the first message and skip objectors.
In the Netherlands the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, last edited 9 April 2025, reads Telecommunications Act article 11.7 as advance consent for digital direct marketing, including mail to a company. Exceptions: an address published for that purpose, and a company outside the EEA under that country’s rules. Existing customers may hear about your own equivalent products. Give an easy, free objection when you receive the details and in every message, then stop. Do not copy the UK corporate-subscriber rule into that send.
The first month is one path, not a stack
Ship one path. HubSpot says to start from a manual process that slows the team down, and to test a sample record before live people. With sales, also test a duplicate, a failed enrichment, a blank, and a conflict, on access you hold.
Leave the role unfilled until these are true
Keep the search closed until a qualified lead is defined and a conversation repeats. CRV treats the seat as an amplifier after product-market fit and one acquisition channel that needs an owner. Founders hold customer feedback and positioning until both stop changing every few weeks. On that page, 40 percent or more of customers saying they would be disappointed without the product is a strong sign of product-market fit. When marketing automation makes sense is whether the step repeats.
Questions that separate the operator from the specialist
CRV screens the growth half by a loss they can name: an invalidated hypothesis, retention versus acquisition, a test that lost, how they pick three tests from 20 ideas, which stage they would own first, a product change shipped without managing the engineers, and a small-sample lift they would not act on yet. Three work samples, not a budget split: a timed brainstorm plus two further ideas, a teardown with the first three tests, and a ranked critique of the live signup flow. First hire: unsettled messaging and ideal customer, then product marketing; marketing-led acquisition, then a growth marketer; sales-led, then a pipeline role; product-led, then a growth-focused product manager.
What I would wire up first
I would write the qualified-lead sentence with you and ship one CRM path, with your approval before anything a prospect reads. For a freshly funded startup this is an all-in go-to-market engagement: one freelance marketer for marketing, AI, and automation, fully remote, from the first message to the first customers, without a separate specialist for every part. See who executes that early go-to-market work.
I am one person, Poldermarketing, a sole proprietorship, remote, in Dutch and English. Hire me freelance or fractional, a few days a week. I am AI-native and strong in AI, content, automation, and workflows. I build and run the work. Google Ads and Meta Ads are newer for me: I set them up and review them, not a large paid program.
If the offer is still hard to say, start with the free growth scan. How I work is the engagement. Positioning and messaging is where the words are the constraint.
Questions people ask
How is this different from a marketing automation specialist?
A marketing automation specialist builds workflows, scoring, and nurture inside a platform once someone else has set the playbook. Salesforce places that seat beside a data analyst and a technology administrator, in the same role table as the marketing operations manager, who oversees the function. This hire also picks the audience, the offer, and the test that stops. If a candidate cannot name a test they killed, you are hiring the specialist.
Does this hire need to code?
No. CRV, on 14 September 2026, says a growth marketer does not need to code. SQL helps some candidates pull product usage without waiting on engineering, and many roles use self-service analytics. Statistics and clear communication with engineers count for more. A builder who cannot name a stopped test is the automation seat, not this one. Require code only when the CRM's own steps cannot reach the record.
What should the first automated path include?
One source you already trust. The record is created or updated, duplicates are blocked, a score you wrote chooses the route, the owner receives a task, and a failed step raises an alert. HubSpot's demo pattern covers the update, the assignment, the confirmation, and the task. It does not show the duplicate block, the score you wrote, or the failure alert. Those stay in your test. Run a sample, including a duplicate, before live people.
Does automated outreach need consent?
It depends on the recipient. The ICO says the UK electronic-mail rule skips corporate subscribers, including an employee's address. Name yourself and give an opt-out. Stop if they object and the contact is personal data. Sole traders and some partnerships need consent or the soft opt-in. The European Commission says EU email marketing must follow the ePrivacy Directive. A bought list needs proof of GDPR-compliant collection and proof the seller may use it for advertising.
When should the work stay manual?
Keep the steps manual when you cannot yet define a qualified lead, when a notification is the whole workflow, or when nobody can approve a message a prospect will see. CRV treats the seat as an amplifier of demand you already have, after product-market fit and one repeatable acquisition channel that needs an owner. Founders keep customer feedback and positioning until both stop changing every few weeks. A score on a vague definition only files weak records faster.
