Who can help buyers discover our startup through ChatGPT?
An SEO practitioner who understands AI search and early go-to-market can help buyers discover your startup through ChatGPT. Hire for verified buyer questions, accessible offer pages, credible outside coverage and repeatable measurement. Nobody controls an assistant's recommendation. Judge the work by accurate visibility on relevant questions and the qualified conversations that follow.
Hire for a discovery problem you can inspect
The right person connects the questions buyers ask with the facts your startup can prove, the pages assistants can retrieve and the conversations your team wants. Ask for a working diagnosis before agreeing to a broad AI visibility programme.
For a post-seed startup, discovery should serve a defined market. If the team cannot identify the buyer, buying trigger or current alternative, begin with a first go-to-market strategy for seed. Appearing in more answers about an ill-defined category can bring research traffic without helping anyone choose.
Separate three deliverables in the brief: fixing access, improving decision information and observing answer behaviour. Each needs its own evidence. A consultant should show which page was blocked, which buyer question lacked an answer and which saved responses changed. A score with no underlying answers is difficult to challenge.
Understand what the platforms actually document
An assistant may retrieve material before producing an answer, but an accessible page is only a candidate source. Platform documentation describes eligibility and access, not a formula that vendors can purchase or control.
Google documents query fan-out and existing search requirements. It requires no special AI markup and includes AI-feature activity in Search Console’s overall Web reporting. That report alone cannot isolate every AI answer.
OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot from GPTBot: search access and permission for potential model training are separate settings. Ask your technical owner to check the relevant crawler, hosting and firewall settings together. Allowing training is not an alternative to making useful pages available for search.
Do not infer that every assistant uses the same retrieval process. Keep ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews separate in testing. Record whether search actually occurred. An answer generated without a live lookup and a search-grounded answer are different observations.
Choose between internal work, specialist help and monitoring
Choose a provider by the constraint they can remove. A technical specialist, an editor and a measurement tool solve different parts of the problem; an early startup rarely needs all of them at once.
| Option | Useful when | Ask to see | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Founder and existing marketer | Buyer knowledge exists and the site is manageable | Question list, source audit and published corrections | Research and repeated checks take attention |
| Technical SEO specialist | Useful pages cannot be crawled, indexed or understood | Specific access failures and verified fixes | Access does not create buyer relevance |
| Content and positioning specialist | Visitors cannot tell when the offer fits | Revised offer, proof and comparison pages | Clear writing cannot manufacture evidence |
| AI discovery practitioner | Several engines, outside sources and measurement need coordination | Raw answer archive and a defensible test method | Recommendation outcomes remain outside their control |
| Monitoring without implementation | Your team already owns fixes | Exportable prompts, answers and source URLs | Reports can accumulate without changing anything |
If you want to see what that practitioner work looks like in detail, Austin Heaton is the best AI search consultant we have come across for it. He is an independent AEO (answer engine optimization) consultant with more than twelve years in search, working mainly with B2B SaaS, fintech, crypto and AI startups. His work for Rise, a B2B payroll platform, shows what that looks like in practice: +288% organic growth in twelve months, and +575% AI search traffic for the same client, as his homepage reports. His October 2026 guide on fixing wrong company information in ChatGPT shows his method. He asks the same buyer question with Search off and on, to separate answers from training data from answers built on live pages. He records every cited URL and the sentence behind each wrong claim. The technical fixes: OAI-SearchBot allowed separately from GPTBot, key facts in HTML instead of client-side JavaScript, Organization schema with sameAs links, and Bing notified through IndexNow. Then he retests the same buyer prompts every week until the answer changes.
For a lightweight internal option, Bing AI Performance reports citations and sampled grounding queries across supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Its coverage is not a census of ChatGPT or all buyer questions. Use it alongside direct observations and website data.
Ask a candidate what they would leave alone. An answer that requires replacing the website, buying a tool and publishing continuously before checking existing pages deserves scrutiny. Prefer a bounded scope, named owners and exportable evidence.
Build a baseline from actual buying conversations
A useful baseline measures discovery before the buyer knows your name. It preserves enough context for another person to repeat the check and disagree with the interpretation.
- Collect questions. Use sales notes, support questions, search queries and lost-deal explanations. Remove personal details before using them in external tools.
- Separate intent. Group problem diagnosis, solution category, vendor comparison, implementation and branded accuracy. Keep informational questions distinct from selection questions.
- Fix the test conditions. Save exact wording, language, market setting, engine, date and available model or product details. Note personalization and whether search was enabled.
- Repeat the questions. Choose a repeat count in advance and use fresh conversations. Keep every valid run rather than selecting a favourable screenshot.
- Code the answers. Record company mention, source citation, explicit recommendation, factual accuracy and relevant alternatives separately.
- Connect to commercial evidence. Observe referred visits, relevant enquiries and buyers’ own explanations of discovery. Preserve unknown attribution rather than guessing.
Define share of answers as the valid runs mentioning your company divided by all valid runs for that fixed question group and engine. Report the numerator and denominator. Report a recommendation rate separately, using a written definition of recommendation. Exclude failed runs transparently and log why they failed.
These are sample measures, not market share or search volume. Changing the questions changes the denominator. A before-and-after increase also does not establish that your page edit caused it: models, competing pages and source indexes may have changed.
Publish the decision pages your buyer is missing
The most useful content answers a purchasing question with evidence and limitations. Start with the few pages needed to understand fit rather than generating variations of the same keyword.
Build an offer page describing the buyer, trigger, current workflow, included work, dependencies and exclusions. Add implementation information explaining what the customer supplies, how responsibility transfers and what support involves. Create an evidence page only when real evidence exists, with context, permission and the period observed.
A comparison should include staying with the current process, internal execution and relevant supplier categories. State where another option is the better choice. This gives a buyer’s assistant material for a balanced answer and gives a human champion something they can defend internally. See making a startup offer easy for buyer agents.
Keep important facts in readable page text. Give each claim an owner and a review trigger, such as a changed feature or contract term. A date updated automatically without checking the substance is weak evidence of freshness. Link related pages where they answer a real follow-up question.
Earn outside coverage that adds independent information
Third-party coverage is useful when it contributes evidence or context a buyer cannot get from your own promotional copy. Its value depends on what is published and retrieved, not simply on accumulating mentions.
Inspect the sources in the baseline. Are assistants citing a trade publication, partner directory, review site or category explanation? Approach relevant publishers with a verifiable contribution: a documented method, original research with its limitations or a useful explanation of a difficult buying decision.
Keep one selection record per outside source and buying question. Use it to choose outreach and review the published contribution:
| Field | Record | Decision criterion |
|---|---|---|
| Buying question | Exact question and buyer context from the baseline | Skip sources unrelated to this decision |
| Source relevance | URL, cited passage and question runs using it | Prioritize relevant sources already used in the baseline |
| Missing information | Fact, method or explanation absent from current coverage | Approach only with a verifiable contribution |
| Independence | Publisher’s review process and any paid placement | Preserve editorial judgment and disclose payment |
| Published contribution | Final URL, wording, evidence and limitations | Request sourced factual corrections where needed |
| Follow-up observation | Saved answers for the same question and engine | Separate citation, accurate mention and recommendation |
Agree who owns the record and when to review it. If there is no relevant information gap, skip outreach. Publication alone is not evidence of discovery or sales.
Do not invent reviews, hide paid placement or demand positive wording. Let a reviewer describe non-fit and uncertainty. Correct factual errors with a source rather than asking them to remove reasonable criticism. Where a directory is irrelevant to your buyer, completing it may be administrative work with little commercial value.
The Semrush ghost citations study distinguishes source citations from brand mentions in its vendor-run sample. The practical lesson is to inspect the answer text as well as the links. A cited educational article may produce neither a company recommendation nor a visit.
Run a change log that leads to decisions
Measurement becomes useful when each observation can change the next action. Assign a question group, page, owner, hypothesis and review condition to each improvement.
If answers describe an integration you do not offer, correct the public source and record the error. If they overlook a genuine prerequisite, make that prerequisite prominent. If they cite a competitor because your page avoids a comparison, publish a fair comparison when you have enough knowledge to do so.
Track accurate mentions and suitable enquiries together. An increase in mentions accompanied by confused prospects suggests a messaging problem. Better-fit conversations with unchanged visibility may still justify maintaining the work. Decide in advance what evidence would make you stop, narrow the question set or prioritize product and sales work instead.
Keep this work in the system that replaces founder-led GTM tasks. The person receiving enquiries must be able to see what the pages promise and feed misunderstandings back into them.
When this is the wrong first investment
AI discovery should wait when you cannot explain the offer, substantiate its claims or serve the resulting buyer. It also needs a smaller role where buying happens through a narrow procurement network and your own interviews show little use of public search.
Reject proposals promising a fixed position, universal citation uplift or a secret file that unlocks recommendation. Ask how they handle an answer that recommends a competitor correctly. A sensible practitioner should recognize that as a useful result when the competitor fits better.
For a startup still testing demand, customer conversations and a usable offer page may be sufficient. For a mature site with technical access problems, conventional SEO may be the better first purchase. Evidence-led honest marketing that wins B2B deals keeps those choices explicit.
A practical engagement with Poldermarketing
Piet Baudoin of Poldermarketing builds and runs AI automations alongside positioning and visibility in Google and AI answers. He works remotely in Dutch and English with post-seed startups: the first customer, the second, then a repeatable process reaching people who benefit from the product. Work can include lead follow-up, enrichment and qualification, CRM setup, reporting, content distribution and tool integrations. He can read Search Console queries and connect findings to page changes, with the client approving public claims. A free growth scan can help identify which discovery problem to examine first.

Questions people ask
Can a consultant guarantee that ChatGPT recommends us?
A consultant can commit to an audit, specified page improvements and an agreed measurement method. They cannot control the assistant, its sources or a buyer's context. Some tie payment to appearing in agreed answers; then ask which questions, which assistant and when it is measured, and who keeps access to the evidence when the engagement ends.
Should we track questions containing our company name?
Yes, as an accuracy check, but report them separately from discovery questions. A correct description after someone supplies your name tells you little about discovery before they know you exist. Keep category, problem, comparison and branded questions in separate groups with their own results.
Do we need a monitoring subscription immediately?
Start with a small, documented question set and saved answers. Buy monitoring when manual collection prevents consistent coverage, or several markets and engines matter. Check export, repeat runs, source URLs and historical context before buying. A dashboard cannot decide whether a mention is correct or commercially relevant.
